Manuel leads a department of data management, data science, business analytics, and
insights professionals who drive informed decisions, strategy, and actions across CMG
and other parts of the Genentech/Roche enterprise. The people of this department do
this by synthesizing internal & external insights drawn from the analysis of primary and
secondary data. The work of this department informs decisions that impact both product
commercialization across the Genentech portfolio as well as business and customer
operations, including business development due diligence and pipeline products in
clinical development, to commercial launch preparation, in-line products, field strategy
and execution, data strategy, and commercial investments. Manuel joined Genentech in
2005 and has held multiple roles of increasing responsibility in competitive Intelligence,
market Planning, analytics, insights, and organizational change leadership.
Prior to Genentech, Manuel worked at startup companies, including Prolexys
Pharmaceuticals (formerly Myriad Proteomics) and Ingenuity Systems (acquired by
Qiagen), in various scientific research, business development, and operations capacities.
Manuel holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, a PhD in
molecular pharmacology from Stanford University, and a BA in chemical engineering
and biochemistry from Rice University. He is a husband, father, and son with a near-
constant devotion to various forms of bicycling and pun-inshingly bad jokes. He can be
